What's New in EMSE Suite v5.2

5.2 Release 070706
This release adds many new features to EMSE Suite, such as:

  • Time-Frequency Analysis using the wavelet transform with interactive graphical display
  • source estimation enhancements such as beamformers, sLoreta, local estimators and source estimation from power spectral density (PSD) data
  •  usability improvements like more toolbar buttons, better axis labels, improved copy-to-clipboard functionality, autoload default electrode locations from BioSemi & EGI
  • nhanced time series display, including multi-channel overlays, and improved scale display for time series data
  • improved file readers for 3D Dicom & MINC (MRI), CTS (MEG), InStep (EEG), and Miraclink (MCG)
  • enhancements for display & analysis of MEG and joint EEG/MEG datasets
  • Time-frequency enhancements such as time-frequency coherence in signal space or source space & optional scale frame for time-frequency display
  • more control for tomographic source estimator display with MRI overlay
  • new ocular artifact correction tools such as one-button ocular artifact filter for EEG & linear regression ocular artifact reduction using an EOG channel
  • ICA notch filter
  • trimmed summary statistics (mean, standard deviation) and outlier rejection (in time and frequency domains)
  • Source Estimation using beamformers and other local estimators
  • Data Editor has improvements especially related to ERP/F functionality, including one-click single-channel display, batch averaging, peak detection and compressed trial array
  • Epilepsy analysis tools such as automated interictal spike detection
  • Functional connectivity tools include Dynamic Imaging of Coherent Sources (DICS)
  • many new file formats are supported, such as Nicolet BNI, Neuroconn, Plexon, Neuromag and 4D dipole files
  • MR Viewer now features automatic brightness control and cortex map data display

These are in addition to other new features in the 5.x series, including:

  • Time-Frequency Extensions such as source space and signal space coherence
  • Usability Enhancements including more toolbar buttons for common tasks, improved data display with multi channel overlays and copy to clipboard feature
  • File support now includes a 3D Dicom reader, CTS, MiraClink and MINC files, autoloading default electrode locations from Biosemi and EGI
  • One-click ocular ortifact correction and cross correlation filter for artifact rejection
  • Trimmed summary statistics and outlier rejection
  • Improved M/EEG support, including simultaneous M/EEG for distributed sources
  • Improved cortical segmentation using hidden Markov random fields (HMRF-EM)
  • A full spectrum of Spatial Components analysis tools, including ICA, PCA, Varimax and Promax fitting and ocular artifact correction
  • Statistical randomization testing; paired comparisons and  p-maps; LORETA statistics
  • Locator USB support for the Polhemus Patriot tracking device
  • Even more supported file formats for M/EEG, MRI and functional imaging

Users of earlier versions of EMSE Suite software will find that EMSE Suite v5.x is somewhat of a departure in its overall structure from v4.2. A major change is the workspace concept, which allows you to group many different files into a single project, and also to group different projects into an integrated workspace environment. We have made a substantial effort to improve the overall stability and reliability of the software, and have fixed problems that our users have reported in earlier versions, as well as implementing many user-suggested improvements. In addition, we have added many significant new features which extend the software functionality, a partial listing of which you may find below.

Data Editor

Wavelet transform is now available, with an interactive graphical user interface (GUI). Spatial component analysis of time series, including PCA, PCA with rotations (Varimax and Promax), and ICA (both InfoMax and SOBI). Event Review mode allows you to view data and components on an event-by-event basis. Additional file formats are supported (see Formats page). The preprocessor module (PPM) provides a "filter pipeline" where all your signal processing directives are grouped, enabling you to see at a glance which filters have been applied to your data, and to enable or disable any combination of filters quickly and easily.

Source Estimator
Time-frequency domain (wavelet) source estimation is now supported for linear methods, including LORETA. Signal space and source space coherence is available in v5.1.

Visualizer
One-click animation and p-map displays, canonical and user defined views.

MR Viewer
More file formats are supported. 16-bit and floating point data can be imported and displayed. Improved navigation with real-time sliders and warp-to-point feature enabling you to instantly zoom to any point in the volume. Additional support for fMRI datsets is included.

Image Processor
Many new features have been added to the Image Processor to improve segmentation: the brain extraction tool has been implemented, as well as automated tissue classification using a hidden Markov random field algorithm. An improved tiling algorithm now includes topology correction and mesh reduction.
